Reading
I'm The One That I Want by Margaret Cho. I was so disappointed that I couldn't make the book fair at UCLA last weekend with my friend Tracey, so she thought to buy the book for me. I missed the one-woman show when I lived in New York, but Tracey and I went to see the film last fall in Santa Monica. If you want to know how much my friends rock, Tracey even had it autographed:

Erica
Good luck in New York!

I'm also still reading Simple Indulgence: Easy, Everyday Things to Do for Me by Janet Eastman. I'm such a dork, I keep reading the quotes and ideas, but not doing the journalling portion.

Listening
Stuck in my head:
"Boogie-oogie-oogie get down."

Thank you, Disco Stu! (My favorite Simpsons sight gag-cum-character.)

I heard Britney Spears' "Bottom of My Broken Heart" while making a selection from the feminine hygeine aisle at Wal Mart and exclaimed, "Fucking Britney Spears...Gah!"

That's one of the videos I had to watch about a million times to select snippets for the web site and the enhanced CD single. Ever hearing it again is too much, too soon.

__________
Watching
The Simpsons, The Sopranos & Armistead Maupin's Further Tales of the City. I didn't even realize there were making another one, I just happened to see it listed. I'm going to have to finish the book series now, as I think I've only read through the fourth book and this mini-series is based on the third book.

Webbing

While you're visiting the Gallery of Regrettable Food, don't miss Meat!. This one in particular made me laugh until I couldn't breathe. "Sometimes meat likes to dress up and feel pretty." Swanson Parade of Lost Identity -- women who, in probably their only 15 minutes of fame, were for the most part known only as Mrs. HisLastName.

Co-Author of The Rules to divorce! So you can't manipulate a man into marrying and staying married to you? Perhaps you have to come into it as two individuals and show who you really are from the beginning? I guess this means that no amount of growing your hair long, pretending not to be smart or funny, and "training" a man will make for a happy marriage.

Ever wonder where that dollar bill's been? Mine was in Chicago two months ago.

Dreamin' is free

Another Elvis dream (I'm doing the Memphis section of my color scrapbook now, but I haven't got to Graceland yet), this one cannibalistic.

What started out as an autopsy to discover THE TRUTH, turned into Elvis Stew. It was rich and beefy. Ewwwwwwwww!

Thinking
Why is it that the same personality quirks are taken as crazy and stalky by some, while loveably wacky by others? Is there some litmus test for this, so I stop wasting my time?

I am...not writing a proper entry until much later today, as I'm busy with more pressing things. However, if you'd like to take a stroll down memory lane, please read the brand new essay I wrote upon finding a 16-year-old copy of 16 Magazine under my bed recently.

I am...so blessed in the friend department. Today there was a veritable avalanche of goodwill as has been the trend this week. I miss snail mail. There is nothing like getting a hand written letter or card.

It's amazing, too, to finally see the handwriting of these people with whom I've been corresponding for months, even years. Sorry to say my handwriting has deteriorated so much over the last 7 years as to be almost unreadable. I am so ashamed. If I sent you a card or some oddly packed cookies, please keep in mind that I've been so rushed lately and am really not completely off my rocker. Sometimes I see notes I literally scrawled and I cringe, because I know I can do better, I'm just out of practice.

I am...sick and not going to write the proper entry I'd hoped tonight. Cannot be helped, but I hope with lots of medicine, liquids and sleep that I'll be somewhat functioning tomorrow.

7:19 PM
I am...sorry to report my vibrators are still AWOL. Today was my first day with no school work to do or classes to go to and I was looking to unwind.

I did, however, find some nudie girl cards, my cookie dough scooper, the Princess Leia and Marilyn Monroe ornaments I bought a year or two ago, but have never used. I'm also quite glad I found my hair clippers. I could've sworn I'd unpacked them or had them on my trip, even among the stuff I mailed from my grandma's house or Memphis.

But no, they were in a box with some of my journals, which I'd sent to Dorothy, who was kind enough to remind me that I sent my vibes, journals and other contraband to her so my mom wouldn't find them while I was travelling. So I found all kinds of groovy stuff, but not what I was looking for. I have to get my own apartment if only to have all of my clothes and things accessible.

Adios a mi pelo

Anyway, I'm really pleased about the clippers, since it means I can cut my own hair. It is to the point that about 1 inch is virgin, nappy hair, while the other 2 inches were chemically straightened, but have since started to go back home. It's really hard to comb through the dense and kinky roots in order to get the straight parts in any sort of order. Basically, hair divided against itself cannot stand, to completely misquote Abe Lincoln.

I've been wanting to cut my hair for at least a month, but haven't had the money for either a haircut or a new pair of clippers, so I've been wearing the "I'm not a Muslim" hat quite a lot, which I think intimidates some people and is no good whatsoever for job interviews.

Ugh, feh...yes, I am job hunting. I'll have no money for the last bits of software I need or business cards or flyers to promote that company I'm trying to start if I don't find anything. Besides, there's SquishyCon next month, too.

4:40 AM
I am...going to class for the first time since Tuesday, but I haven't accomplished much since then. In fact, today's homework, a Director movie, is the only thing I've finished.

I guess I needed to play a bit, because I spent 14 hours writing and making Flash movies and such for the site. I've turned a corner and can do what I want to do in Flash now, though there are so many other things I need to learn. I'd like to make a proper animation, rather than just words and pictures fading in and out, though I really like the way that adds a sort of tone and meter to the voice I'm developing here.

. . .
By the way, if you're on my notify list, a lot of this will sound familiar, but now you get to see the pictures!
I went for a job interview last Wednesday. I remembered in getting there, filling out the paperwork and taking the software tests, how much I hate the process. It was a temp agency, and yet again I forgot about the 2 hours of testing any software skills you claim to have.

In the end, they were really impressed with my resume, New York experience and all, plus when I explained how much else I took on at my last job. Also, my software scores were good. 100% for Word basic and intermediate skills and 96% for advanced skills. A measly 82% for Excel...it seemed somewhat foreign to me, I think because I've been using Office 2000 and this was '97. It looked a lot different than what I've become used to.

. . .

After the interview I had lunch at Lake Alice, my old college bar. I resisted shooting some pool for old time's sake.
The California Museum of Photography

After lunch, I walked to the California Museum of Photography. I've meant to do that since I went to college here and heard of it. It was amazing. I only saw the first floor, as I had to get home before The Boy. Still, on that floor I saw incredible books and postcards in the store, a camera obscura, stereocameras and prints, tinotypes, daguerrotypes, a Color Copier exhibit (eerie colors, lovely still-lifes and anthropomorphic animals and trees), works by Ansel Adams, a gallery on iMacs, and a quad camera I just have to have.

That will probably be my first stupid purchase when I get some money. It uses regular film, but has four lenses. Each frame has four prints, which it takes over a one second period. This allows for slight movement between the four frames. It's very, very cool. It's only $12, so not a huge splurge. The effect is worth it. That will bring the total of cameras up to 7, and this after I gave up my small Polaroid to a coworker in NY.

Here's a little bit more of what I saw (Yes, I took pictures in a museum of photography. I am a geek.):

Brownie cameras

A display of the Kodak Brownie cameras from the 1800s on. Unfortunately, it's blurred.

Miniature cameras

Miniature cameras (many of which had "made in occupied Japan" stamped on the back). For the sake of scale, the one that looks like a full-sized SLR (2nd row, 1st from left) is about 2-3 inches wide.

More miniature cameras

More miniature cameras, also mostly from occupied Japan.

Official Girl Scout cameras

Not to be confused with the Brownies, above. What looks like a rack of generic cameras in the back is actually a mold for chocolate cameras.

Instant cameras

Instant cameras. One from the 1800s in the foreground, 60s and 80s model Polaroids in the background.

Alas, that is all I took pictures of. I guess I got into the exhibits and forgot. They have a really incredible online gallery, including some of the stereoprints, go check it out.

. . .

The downtown mall

The downtown mall, where the museum is located, is really interesting and lovely, I should've spent more time there by now.

Between what I've been missing downtown and the availability of wild places to wander through, there are so many opportunities for me to take pictures and I haven't been taking them. I'm going to have to make that my new year's resolution.

Of course, all of this costs money, so I will have to find a job of some sort. The temp agency was confident they could find something for me, but it might not be until after the holidays, so I'll need something in the meantime. I'm going to check the job boards for the local universities and
some companies in town.
I wouldn't mind working the overnight shift at Kinko's, for example. It tends to be slow, especially in the suburbs, and the people I knew who did this in NJ had unlimited access to the computers, if not also steep discounts to the printing services. It would be good for printing up flyers and business cards, now that I think of it.

. . .

City HR department

The city's HR department. I just liked the mirror shot of the Charles Schwab building across the street.

. . .

Old mission, style theater downtown

When I saw this theater downtown I thought immediately that, if I could do anything, I'd buy it and make it an art house. It would probably fare quite well, as it's right downtown and the UC campus isn't very far away. Downtown has all sorts of events on Wednesdays and Sundays, so those days would draw big crowds.

You probably can't read the marquee, but it's for sale. Look at how big it is, I bet it would be a great multi-use building and some of the downstairs areas could be converted to storefronts for more revenue.

side view of theater

I'm not even sure the name of this theater, though I like that it's done in the mission style, so that's how I'm referring to it. At first, I mistook it for the Fox, a few blocks away. That's where Gone With the Wind was first previewed. It was a typically hot Empire day and the theater was full of people there to soak up the theater's air-conditioning.

A woman can dream, can't she?

4:51 AM
I am...not sure what to do about school, as the future of my program is in doubt. It seems the renewal for the program's certification sat on someone's desk in Sacramento for over a year, so the school is struggling through hoops to get the program approved. I could stay here in this program and hope it ends up counting before I end up graduating (though I was going to try for this summer) or take it slowly and hope it works itself out.

I thought it would be OK if I finish by June, since I think the program is certified for this academic year, just not next. Unfortunately, not only would that mean taking 20 units or so between now and June, but also one of the classes I need isn't even offered. In fact, it wasn't offered in the fall, either, so how the hell are people supposed to finish?

Of course, that made me go look at City College of SF's program, which is, naturally, much more thorough and has the built-in opportunities of internships in all the New Media companies there. I've been looking into roommate situations there, and was pleasantly surprised to discover they weren't all $800 and above, what with it being the most expensive city in the universe now, thanks to the spoiled digerati. New York is still an option as well.

I'm not sure I can do the suburbs, it's just not me. First of all, I need to be able to get around without a $10k piece of tin that's a constant source of stress and expense and secondly, I need not always be considered a freak when I'm just being me. Thirdly, I need to get laid once in a while and that just ain't happening in a place where I don't belong. I'm pretty ambivalent, but can't help thinking that there's a reason why I fled this area as soon as I could.

I am...now completely rebuilding my sites and doing Flash movies for fun, just to avoid doing my last two projects, due on Tuesday. Silly, silly bitch.
